Steps to plant chili seeds
Here are the steps you must follow to plant your chili seeds.
Get the seeds ready for plantation.
The first step is to prepare the pepper seeds for the plantation.
To do that:
- Take your paper towel and spread it wide on the ground.
- Place all the seeds on it, then spray some water on them.
- Please fold the paper towel and put it aside.
Keep the paper towel like that for like a week. Make sure to spray water on it every day, so it stays damp. Please don't put it in an arid environment, a bit of warmth and humidity is required for the seeds to get ready.
Plant the seeds
Next, you're going to plant the seeds in the soil.
If you're using planters, fill them with fertilized soil and plant the seeds in it. If you're planting on the ground, spread them on the soil and sprinkle some fertilized soil on the top.
Water the seeds
Just like every other plant, chili plants need water to grow — but not a lot.
Some people mistake putting in too much water to their chili seeds — but that's not the way to go. Instead, please give them a little bit of water that doesn't make the seeds submerged. To put it simply for you, give them as much water as you would try in a few hours.
That's because chili seeds prefer a dry-wet-dry-wet cycle, it makes them grow faster and better!
Growing in
After around a week of planting the seeds, you will see two tiny leaves coming out of the soil. You don't need to do anything special to take care of those, just keep watering them as you usually do.
30-45 days after the plantation, you will see tiny blossoms coming out of the plants. They will stay on for around a week, then fall off.
After a few days, you must see a small chili taking the place of the fallen flower.
Pluck them away
When the baby chili grows to around 5cm in length, you're free to pluck it. However, different kinds of chilies should be plucked after different periods.
But in most cases, your gut feeling will tell you whether chili is ready to be plucked.
If you want your chilies to get spicier and fuller in flavor, let it on for a few more days. Don't pluck them until they turn red if you want your regular green chilies to grow hotter. The longer they stay on, the hotter they get!
Suit yourself and pluck them away when you feel like it.
Some instructions to keep in mind
Here are a few things that you must keep in mind while you're growing chilies.
- Only choose your seeds from a trusted supplier that doesn't compromise on quality.
- Pick a supplier that has multiple seed types so that you can add a bit of variety to your chili garden.
- While you keep your seeds in a damp paper towel, ensure you're not exposing them to direct sunlight.
- But when you're on to the next step, i.e., planting, do it in a location with direct sunlight. Chili plants love the heat.
- Make sure to water your chili plants regularly, but don't overdo it. Otherwise, the plants may drown.
- Let the chilies stay on the plant for longer if you want them to become spicier and hotter.
