HOW TO GROW AFRICAN MARIGOLD FROM SEEDS
White African marigolds require full or partial sun and soil with good drainage. Container planting also works well for these flowers. Approximately six inches of soil should be tilled six weeks before you plant by removing weeds and grass. If you would like to add more nutrients, consider adding compost. When the last frost has passed, scatter seeds over the garden. Plant seeds in pots indoors up to four to six weeks before the last frost of the season if you wish to start seeds earlier. It takes one to two weeks for seeds to germinate between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
CARE FOR AFRICAN MARIGOLDS AFTER GERMINATION
Summer and autumn are the finest times to see African marigolds blooming because they can withstand heat and drought. While they will tolerate clay or dry soil, they prefer moist, well-draining soil. Maintain moist but not wet soil by watering regularly. After rain or watering, watch for puddles of water or squishy mud six hours after watering. This indicates the soil is not draining, and your flowers are at risk of drowning. Deadheading or removing a spent flower will prevent damage to the stems during the summer and early autumn and prolong blooming.
USES AND BENEFITS OF AFRICAN MARIGOLD
Externally, African marigolds can treat sores, ulcers, eczema, conjunctivitis, rheumatism, and sore eyes. A paste made from the leaves can be used to treat boils, carbuncles, and earaches externally. It is diuretic, carminative, and vermifuge. The decoction of this herb can be used to treat colds and mumps. Dried marigold flowers can be used to prepare tea. Adding a tablespoon of dried flowers to boiled water before steeping the tea can allow the petals to be dried at a low temperature and then dried at a low temperature.
