HOW TO GROW AFRICAN MARIGOLD FROM SEEDS

Sun or partial shade and well-draining soil are required for these annuals. African marigolds can also be planted in containers. You should prepare the soil approximately six inches deep a few weeks before you plan to grow by removing weeds and grass. Compost or other organic materials can provide nutrients to the soil as well. Once the last frost has passed, scatter seeds across the garden. The seeds germinate between 20 and 22 degrees celsius and emerge between 7 and 14 days after being planted.

CARE FOR AFRICAN MARIGOLDS AFTER GERMINATION

Clay or dry soil is fine for African marigolds, but they prefer moist, well-draining soil. Regular watering helps to maintain moist but not soggy soil. When you notice water puddles or a squishy texture in the soil six hours after rain or watering, the soil is not draining, and your flowers may drown. As a result of drowning, the roots begin to rot, and the leaves become brown and die. Keeping your marigolds compact will prevent them from spreading out.

USES AND BENEFITS OF AFRICAN MARIGOLD

African marigold is used externally for treating sores, ulcers, eczema, conjunctivitis, rheumatism, and sore eyes. Boils, carbuncles, and earaches can be treated externally with a paste made from the leaves. It is diuretic, carminative, and vermifuge. Mumps and colds can be treated with decoction. Marigold tea can be prepared from dried flowers. The flower petals can be dried at a low temperature and then boiled in water with a tablespoon of dried flowers added before the tea is brewed.
