HOW TO GROW GIANT ONION FROM SEEDS

In mid-February, giant onion seeds should be sown in flats. The seeds should be planted thickly and later thinned to a half-inch spacing. Once the plants reach five inches in height, they should be clipped. Good drainage and loose soil are essential. It is best to use sandy soil. Raised beds work well. Compacted, hard soil will prevent the bulb's growth. If necessary, add about an inch and a half of peat moss, compost, or other organic matter. The type of fertilizer you should use can be determined by testing your soil. It needs a lot of space. If the bulbs are too close together, they will not grow properly. Rows should be spaced 12 to 18 inches apart, 4 to 6 inches between plants. They can be planted in two rows or multiple rows per bed.

CARE FOR GIANT ONION AFTER GERMINATION

Full sun is required for the giant onions. Usually planted outside in late April, onions tolerate light frost. They require irrigation for giant bulbs. The roots of onions are shallow, making them vulnerable to drought. Rainfall or irrigation should provide one inch of water every week to the plant. During bulb growth, the availability of water is crucial. During this stage, some gardeners water 1.5 inches every week. Weeds compete for water, nutrients, and sunlight, so you have to control them.

USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF GIANT ONION

Commonly known as the giant onion, Allium giganteum is a species native to mid and southwestern Asia but cultivated in many countries as a garden plant. Growing to 1.5 meters, it is the tallest species of Allium in common cultivation. Leaves, bulbs, and bulblets are edible. Collect leaves during spring and fall. When the bulbs are large enough, you can use them like cultivated onions in the second year.
