HOW TO GROW PURPLE TURNIP FROM SEEDS

Work garden soil with compost. The goal is to achieve moderately fertile conditions in a well-drained area that receives full sun to partial shade. You can dig shallow trenches a few inches deep with your fingers. Separate the trenches ten to twenty-five inches apart. Plant Purple Top Turnip seeds about an inch apart in the trenches, four to six weeks before the last frost, and cover lightly with soil. Harvest should occur in late spring. Purple top and other turnip varieties grow best in temperatures from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius during the day. Alternatively, sow the turnip seeds in late summer for a fall harvest after high temperatures have passed. In regions with cooler summers, sow them every two weeks through the middle of the summer for a continuous yield.

CARE FOR PURPLE TURNIP AFTER GERMINATION

When they are a few inches tall, thin, the turnip sprouts 4 to 6 inches apart, keeping the toughest ones. To protect the top of the tubers from harsh sun, mulch the purple top plants with straw. Keep the soil continually moist by watering the purple top plants regularly. The tubers grow most quickly and tenderly when the soil is constantly wet. Do not allow the soil to dry out. Halfway through the growing season, side dresses the purple tops with compost by spreading it between the rows next to the plants. Keep the turnip bed weeded constantly. The roots of weeds can lead to small purple top tubers and encourage pest infestations.

USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF PURPLE TURNIP

Purple Top Turnips can be baked or boiled in stews, soups, or stir-fries, or lightly steamed with butter, salt, or lemon juice for flavoring. Make your own coleslaw: Peel and julienne. Turmeric makes an excellent matchstick garnish. Besides fiber and vitamins A, C, D, E, B1, B3, B5, B6, B2, and folate (one of the B vitamins), turnips contain minerals such as manganese, potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, and copper. Additionally, they contain phosphorus, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein.
