HOW TO GROW GREEN ONION FROM SEEDS

In a soil temperature of at least 17 degrees celsius, green onion or scallion seeds will germinate as soon as you know the soil will remain warm enough for the seeds. Whether they can be planted in a garden bed or a pot indoors, scallions require at least six hours of full sun during the daytime. Scallions don't need fertilizer because they're not heavy feeders. Young onions grow well in well-draining soil that contains organic matter. It would help if you sowed seeds one to two inches apart and only one-quarter of an inch deep.

CARE FOR GREEN ONION AFTER GERMINATION

To grow successfully, green onions need to be watered regularly. As the seeds germinate, keep the soil evenly moist. When your scallion seedlings are one to two inches tall, thin them with shears so that there is one scallion every two inches, thawing the seedlings gives the scallions more room to grow and prevents them from competing for nutrients with nearby plants. Growing scallions requires very little maintenance. Since they have shallow roots and one tall stalk, they can be grown in a limited amount of space, both indoors and outdoors.

USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF GREEN ONION

Thinly sliced raw green onions can be used as a finishing touch on foods such as soups, stews, grilled meats, dips, deviled eggs, potato salads, and omelets. Serve stir-fried vegetables and meats with one-inch-thick slices of green onions. Include them raw in green salads to add mild onion flavor. The nutritional benefits of green onions are similar to those of onions and leafy greens like spinach or chard. One medium green onion contains 34% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin K for women and is an excellent vitamin A, vitamin C, and folate source.
