HOW TO GROW CAULIFLOWER ROMANESCO SEEDS

In the spring, romanesco cauliflower should be started in a fertile seedbed or modules of potting soil. Cells should be at least 5cm across. Sow the seeds 1cm deep, sowing two to three seeds per cell. The seedlings can be thinned out once they germinate to leave the strongest ones. Depending on the temperature, they may appear as quickly as four days, but it may take two weeks. Once the seeds are germinated, they can happily float around seven degrees celsius during the daytime with no adverse effects on the seedlings.

CARE AFTER GERMINATION OF CAULIFLOWER ROMANESCO

Romanesco cauliflowers need fertile soil, perhaps improved with plenty of well-rotted manure or compost over the winter. Plant them in their final positions as soon as the seedlings are 10-15cm tall. Closer spacing results in smaller curds, so you decide how far or near to plant. As you plant each plant, dig a hole and ease the root ball out of the module, as little as possible disturbing the roots. To avoid splashing the leaves, water at the base of the plant and check for insect pests such as cutworms.

CAULIFLOWER ROMANESCO USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS

Cauliflower Romanesco can be roasted or sautéed in olive oil with onions and garlic. Serve it on a sausage sandwich or an Italian sub. It will stand up to the spicy flavors. You can also pickle it with garlic, which has fiber, protective carotenoids, and phytochemicals that may protect against molecular degeneration. Red blood cell production is stimulated, and the iron and folate improve reproductive health in Romanesco.
