HOW TO SOW GREEN GLOBE ARTICHOKE SEEDS

The Seeds you will take from Garden Paradise Seeds are healthy enough to germinate by themselves. Seed should be sown from March to April at 16-18°C in modules or in open ground. In each 3 to 4-inch pot, plant two or three seeds. The pot should be stocked two-thirds full with a good quality soil-based medium containing compost. Adding a little perlite will help improve drainage if the potting mix feels heavy. Cover your seeds with a light dusting of the potting mix after you have sprinkled them in the pot. Make sure to soak the pots well and let them drain well after this first watering. Remember to never make the soil waterlogged, but also not to let heavy soils dry out.

GERMINATION AND CARE OF GREEN GLOBE ARTICHOKE

Artichoke seeds are best germinated in February or March, but they can be started as early as January or as late as the middle of March. Winters in warmer climates, when there are no frosts and mild winters, cause the timing to be different. During the fall, sow seed directly into the ground to grow your artichoke as a short-lived perennial. A healthy flower head is dependent on when seeds are planted. Thus, planting in February might be fruitful. It takes a very long growing season for them to develop into large bushy plants. During the vernalization phase, artichokes must be exposed to temperatures below 10 degrees Celcius for at least two weeks. Yet, they are very frost-sensitive.

HOW TO CARE ARTICHOKE AFTER SPROUTING

As soon as the seedlings have sprouted, water them with a weak fertilizer solution every other week, but don't water them too much so as not to saturate the soil. These plants are heavy feeders! Once a seedling has sprouted, remove the smallest and weakest ones and leave only one per pot. It will make one plant sure to harvest. The seedlings you grow indoors should be between 8 and 10 inches. Harden them off, then plant them outdoors. The plants should be planted 45 - 60 cm apart. You should take good care of them apart from each other and enjoy the results of your labor. Protect the plant from the winter temperatures by mulching it with straw in autumn.
