HOW TO GROW YELLOW ONIONS FROM SEEDS
Plant onion seeds in plug trays or pots for transplanting later as seedlings when they are small. This reduces the need for thinning out, makes the use of seeds more economical, and, given the protection of a greenhouse or cold frame, means sowing can start at least a month earlier in late winter. Prepare plug trays by filling them with seed-starting or general-purpose potting mix and pressing it down firmly into the cells. Plant about four or eight seeds per cell and cover with more potting mix to a depth of nearly a quarter to half an inch or 1 cm. Use a fine spray of water.
CARE AFTER GERMINATION OF YELLOW ONIONS
To prevent disturbing the roots, transplant the seedlings while they're still young. Plant the seedlings about 10 cm apart, firm them into the prepared ground, and water them using a hole punch. Add aged manure or compost to the fall or early spring soil. Onion plants are heavy feeders to produce large bulbs and require constant nourishment. Make sure you fertilize with nitrogen every few weeks to get big bulbs. Once the onions have pushed the soil away and the bulbing process has begun, stop fertilizing. You cannot put the soil back around the onions because the bulb needs room to grow.
YELLOW ONIONS USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS
Depending on age, it can be mild to pungent, but it becomes mellower when cooked. For caramelizing, yellow is ideal. The yellow onion is your best friend when you are sautéing onions as a base for your dish (soup, tomato sauce, whatever). The compounds in onions help fight inflammation, reduce triglycerides, and lower cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease. They are also believed to lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots due to their potent anti-inflammatory properties.
