HOW TO GROW ZINNIA FROM SEEDS

Growing zinnias from seed right in the garden bed is recommended, as they don't like being transplanted and don't thrive well in pots. As zinnias are frost-sensitive, don't seed them until after the last frost. See your local frost dates. The flowering period can be extended by sowing seeds every week for several weeks.  A location that receives full sun is essential. Later in the season, good air circulation can help prevent foliar diseases such as powdery mildew. In terms of soil conditions, zinnias are adaptable to many, but the ideal soil will be well-drained and rich in organic matter. Sow zinnia seeds are only about one cm deep.

CARE FOR ZINNIA PLANTS AFTER GERMINATION

Zinnia seedlings will appear within a week for most varieties, but blooms may take up to several months, depending on the planting location and climate. To maximize air circulation, thin seedlings when they reach three inches tall so that they are six to 18 inches apart. By doing so, powdery mildew is less likely to develop. Water the soil moderately and fertilize lightly to maximize growth and bloom. You can encourage more blooms by cutting off the old flowers after zinnias flower. Zinnias are annuals and will die when the first hard frost occurs in the fall.

USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF ZINNIA

Zinnia flowers and leaves are used as medicinal and ritual herbs by many tribes in the Southwest. The zinnia is considered one of the sacred Life Medicines of the Navajo people. In more practical terms, zinnias were also used to make dyes and paints with bright colors. In their growing season, from May until October, nectar-rich zinnias attract bees and make wonderful pollinators. Hummingbirds, Japanese beetles, ladybugs, and wasps are attracted to them as well. For gardeners seeking easy-to-care-for flowers, zinnias are an excellent choice.
