HOW TO GROW SWEETCORN FROM SEEDS
The sweetcorn prefers a warm climate and cannot tolerate frost. Seeds should be planted in pots in a greenhouse, hoop house, or cold frame once the ground has warmed up. That way, you can begin sowing three to four weeks before your last frost date and enjoy a head start on outdoor-sown corn. Sow eight to ten seeds 1cm deep into 10cm wide pots. Seed-starting potting mixes or general-purpose potting mixes will work fine. The seeds can also be sown into smaller pots or plug trays, germination two seeds per pot or plug, and weaker seedlings should be removed.
CARE AFTER GERMINATION OF SWEETCORN
Carefully tear apart the roots of the young plants after you have removed them from their pots. Keep the soil around the roots intact as much as possible. Now plant your sweet corn 45cm apart in both directions. For each plant, dig a hole, place the seeds in the hole, and then firm the soil back down. Sweet corn hates the cold. Keep pots moist as they grow on. Using your hands, remove any weeds that grow within your sweetcorn and continue the wedding while you can still reach between the plants. Sweetcorn is sturdy and shouldn’t need support. As the silks appear and the cobs start to form in late summer, they will benefit from watering during arid weather.
SWEETCORN USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS
Especially for its versatility, sweet corn has been a staple food for centuries. You can utilize it topping for soups, salads, and pizzas. Cornmeal, polenta, cornmeal, and syrup can all be made with it directly off the cob. Vitamin C, abundant in corn, protects your cells from damage and helps prevent diseases such as cancer and heart disease. The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin located in corn are essential for maintaining good eye health and preventing cataracts.
