HOW TO GROW CRISPHEAD LETTUCE SEEDS

Early spring is the best time to direct seed. The previous fall, prepare the beds by working in manure or compost and raking smooth to leave a fine seedbed. Light is needed to germinate seeds, so sow at a shallow depth and cover with a thin layer of growing medium. Sow seed one cm deep and three centimeters apart in rows fifteen to thirty centimeters apart—delicate plants to 12-inch spacing after having two or three true leaves. You can broadcast seed in a patch rather than rows.

CARE AFTER GERMINATION OF BUTTERHEAD LETTUCE

Before transplanting, reduce water and temperature for three days to harden seedlings. Plant crispheads in rows 18 inches apart, spaced 12 inches apart. Row covers are used to protect young plants from cold, protect young plants from insects, and shade crops when warm weather arrives. Lettuce has a shallow root system. Maintain moist soil to keep plants growing continuously—mulch to keep moisture and prevent weed growth. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.

CRISPHEAD LETTUCE USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS

When consumed regularly, lettuce can provide even more health benefits as part of a balanced diet. Due to its low-calorie content and high nutritional value, this leafy green makes an excellent, healthy staple. The humble Romaine lettuce packs more elevated levels of folic acid than its cousin, kale, a water-soluble form of Vitamin B that helps boost male fertility.
