HOW TO GROW RED CABBAGE FROM SEEDS

You can start Red Cabbage seeds indoors or outdoors. Start seeds grown indoors four to six weeks before the last frost in your area—plant seeds just barely below the surface of the soilless mix. Place the seeds on a heating mat with set temperatures between 18-24 C. Keep the seedlings moist and expose them to direct sunlight or artificial light for 16 hours per day. This cabbage will germinate within 7-12 days. They are replanting when the seedlings have their first true leaves and a week before the final frost. Plants should be refrigerated or in a greenhouse a week before planting.

CARE AFTER GERMINATION OF RED CABBAGE

Transplant in a sunny location with well-draining, compost-rich soil after a week. When growing Red Express, remember that the heads are compact and can be spaced closer together than other varieties. Space plants 38-46 cm. Away from one another, with rows 61-92 cm apart. Fertilize the plants with fish or seaweed emulsion as well as well-amended soil. Cabbage is a heavy feeder. Also, when growing Red Express cabbage, keep the beds consistently moist. Acidic soil may not work well for them, so lime should be added to the soil. If dry weather occurs, water the plants thoroughly before transplanting them.

RED CABBAGE USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS

In most recipes, you can interchangeably use red or green cabbage, but red cabbage requires an additional step. Anthocyanins, which give red cabbage its color, are water-soluble and turn an unappetizing blue color when cooked. Besides providing vitamin K, red cabbage also contains calcium, magnesium, and zinc, essential for bone health. In addition to being high in fiber, red cabbage helps you digest foods and maintain a healthy digestive system.
