HOW TO GROW SWISS CHARD FROM SEEDS

Swiss Chard seeds are best sown about a week after the last spring frost. It’s better to plant them 1/2" deep in compost-enriched soil in full sun. For harvesting the entire plant, space the plants 4-5" apart. In order to harvest continuously the outer stalks, space the plants 8-10" apart. For a continuous summer crop, plant seeds every two weeks. The seeds should germinate after a week. Swiss chard can survive light frosts, so it can also be planted in the fall.

CARE AFTER GERMINATION OF SWISS CHARD

With a layer of mulch, you can ensure that the soil remains moist and weed-free. At the beginning of their growth, seedlings are especially dependent on moisture. As soon as the leaves reach a height of 6-8" they can be harvested for greens. The whole plant can be harvested at the soil surface, but to ensure continued growth, leave an inch of stem. You can also harvest the outer stalks, leaving the inner stalks to grow.

SWISS CHARD USES AND HEALTH BENEFITS

Chard can be steamed or sauteed, and it adds flavor to soups, stews, casseroles, frittatas, and quiches. The young leaves are edible raw in salads. Chard always has green leaves, but the stalks vary in color. Swiss chard is a good source of vitamin C, magnesium, and vitamin A. In addition, beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin are antioxidants in Swiss chard. Many organs, including the heart, lungs, and kidneys, require vitamin A for normal development and maintenance.
