HOW TO GROW ASTER RED FROM SEEDS
It is effortless to grow asters in containers. They grow and bloom best in full sun. Shade-tolerant varieties will produce fewer flowers, however. You should have loamy soil with good drainage. Clay soil with wet roots will lead to root rot, and sandy soil with dry roots will lead to plant wilt. Spacing plants one to four feet apart depends on their variety. Aster flowers can be planted anytime during the growing season. A spring or fall planting will allow plants to get established before the weather gets too hot or too cold. If you live in the northern region, plant anytime between late spring and early fall. Roots will have a chance to grow before winter sets in.
CARE FOR RED ASTER AFTER GERMINATION
Depending on the type and variety, asters grow from one to six feet tall and one to four feet wide. Plants with hairy or smooth leaves and daisy-like flowers are upright and bushy. Tall varieties of asters need to be staked or caged in midsummer to prevent them from falling over in the fall. Make sure they are well hydrated. If they get dry during the summer, water them. The fall flowering of drought-stressed plants may be less impressive. Asters usually do not require much extra fertility if planted in fertile soils. Apply compost in the spring every year.
USES AND BENEFITS OF RED ASTER
When eating aster plants, you can eat the blooms and the leaves. Aster root was applied topically by the Ojibwa to relieve headaches. It was also used to treat venereal diseases. Aster root symbolizes innocence due to its white hue. The red color of asters represents devotion. The pink color of asters symbolizes sensitivity and love. Late in the season, goldenrods and asters attract a wide variety of pollinating insects. During the winter, birds and small animals depend on the seeds and dried stalks for food and shelter.
